Workshop Background: The environment in which dance is taught is often homophobic, racist, sexist, ableist, ageist, classist, and fat phobic. This lends itself to the establishment of extreme heiarchies where aspiring dance students especially non hetoronormative ones are targets of discrimination and extreme cases bullying.

Right To Dance Workshop: Reclaiming Ballet/Contemporary Dance
ILL NANA/DiverseCity Dance Company will provide a workshop that takes participants through guided stretching and conditioning in order to awaken and engage muscles to prepare for safe dancing. Followed by a Contemporary Ballet Barre Class where participants learn the basic technical aspects of dance leading to greater body awareness. Classes are taught in an anti-oppressive framework with a focus on providing LGBTTIQQ2S people, people of colour, varying body types, class backgrounds, and abilities an affirming space to learn dance.
