CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2011 Festival of Ideas & Creation

Canadian Stage is pleased to announce a call for submissions to its annual Festival of Ideas & Creation, May 9-21, 2011 to artists who are currently working on new projects of any length and in early phases of development which incorporate cross-disciplinary practice, who would like the opportunity to share their work publicly in a festival context. Deadline for submissions is December 1, 2010.

The Festival of Ideas & Creation is Canadian Stage‘s flagship artistic development event. Bringing together local, national and international artists to spark new creative projects, the festival encourages cross-pollination between artistic disciplines, and fosters the next generation of artistic innovators. The Festival features an array of programs and opportunities for the public to intersect with the creative process and participate in the artistic conversation. In 2011 the Festival will explore the theme of cross-disciplinary performance practice: the hybridization of theatre, dance, music, film, visual art and other artistic genres in performance-based work.

Full Festival Programming will be announced in February 2011.

Cross-Disciplinary Practice

1.            a cover letter which includes:
– A project description, development history, and how this workshop would fit into your development plans (250 words max)
– How you would  ideally structure this workshop and presentation, and what would be the minimum amount of time that
would benefit your process (250 words max)
– What aspects of cross-disciplinary practice inform and/or challenge your work (250 words max)

2.            10 pages (max) of the Project’s Script, or, for more physical or visual works, a Detailed Description and/or audio video material (max 5 minutes)

3.            Brief Bio(s) of Collaborators

2011 Festival of Ideas and Creation Submission FAQs

Q: What stage of work should my project be in?
A: Projects that are best suited for the festival’s opportunities are ones in development stages which would benefit from time to create, workshop and present in front of an audience. In the past, festival presentations have ranged from projects in the very earliest of drafts to projects in production development for summer festivals or future productions.

Q: Where will the works be presented?
A: Presentations will be staged primarily in our Berkeley Street Upstairs Theatre and Rehearsal Hall. We can also accommodate presentations at other locations at the Berkeley site if an alternative location would better suit the project.

Q: How long do artists typically have to work on their project under the umbrella of the festival?
A: Creative teams have anywhere from 4 to 20 hours of workshop time, plus a public presentation.  These can be consecutive or spread out over the weeks leading up to the festival.  Some projects have additional support that is augmented by the festival resources.

Q: What is the festival performance schedule?
A: Projects will have one or two presentations during the festival, which runs May 9 – 21, 2011. The dates and times will vary.

Q: What kind of technical support do you provide?
A: We provide minimal technical support and technical time in the festival spaces, with general lighting and sound capacities including CD playback and microphones. One space has a piano. There will not be a formal “technical rehearsal”. However, this aspect is somewhat flexible if technical components are crucial aspects of the creation/translation creation.

Q: What remuneration does the festival provide artists?
A: The Festival will contract the artists in your project for a span of workshop rehearsals and presentations. A specific offer will be made with the programming of your project.

Q: Is the format of what is presented flexible, for example, what if we wanted to have an open rehearsal followed by a discussion rather than just a reading or staging of the project?
A: Please outline how you think your work would best benefit from a presentation in the context of the festival, and what format that would ideally take.

Q: Do the presentations have to be a certain length?
A: There are no time minimums or restrictions for the length of the presentations.
