Open Source Forms with Voice and Movement, Susanna Hood
Time: November 29 – December 3, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Location: TBA

$50 for 5 classes
to register email: tolove.in@gmail.com

About the Class:
Having recently received her certification in Open Source Forms (OSF), Susanna offers this methodology as a main container for an exploration into the moving, sounding, and creative self. As an open source system, OSF combines some of the intrinsic ideas and spirit of Skinner Releasing with the evolving practices of its teachers. This five-day cumulative workshop is focused on the creative empowerment of the individual through the shedding of
layers and unnecessary tension, and is guided by the philosophy that we are all natural movers and sounders with a vast capacity for expression, that movement and sound are both physical manifestations of our whole self, that this combined physicality opens a doorway into experiencing our primordial being, and that we are the source of our own wisdom. The class guides participants through different states of consciousness in an improvisational setting, using imagery as a powerful tool for transformation.

About Susanna Hood:
A compelling and virtuosic performer in dance and music, Susanna Hood is the Artistic Director of hum, an interdisciplinary performance company  whose work draws on an integration of movement, voice, live music, and theatre. Independently, as both a dancer and vocalist, she has performed the works of, and collaborated with, various Canadian choreographers, filmmakers, and composers. Her collaborative projects as well as her own choreography and music compositions have been presented throughout Toronto, nationally, and internationally on stage and in film since 1991. Susanna has been the recipient of numerous awards for choreography and performance and most recently, she received the 2008 Victor Martin Lynch-Staunton Award for Outstanding Mid-Career Artist in the Field of Dance. Susanna has been teaching and coaching individuals and groups in voice and movement integration since 1999 and currently teaches Improvisation and Creative Process at the School of the Toronto Dan! ce Theatre. Under the guidance of Stephanie Skura, she is currently training to integrate Open Source Releasing (OSR) into her teaching practice. OSR is an open source system, focused on creative empowerment of the individual, and guided by the philosophy that the source of creativity and wisdom is available in each of us. OSR is based on decades of continuing research and practice in movement, improvisation and performance, and is also inspired by some of the intrinsic ideas and spirit of Skinner Releasing.

Learn Contemporary Dance, Improvisation, Hip Hop & Body Tap

Create and Perform your own Choreography

The series is divided up so that there are 3 classes in each style, plus time for participants to contribute to the development of a choreography that the class will perform informally at the end of the session.

*Contemporary Dance
Learn principles of contemporary dance, core stability, musicality, moving in and out of the floor, technique and combinations. Taught by Meagan O’Shea. “One of the city’s most engaging artists.” Toronto Star.
*Improvisation/Movement Creation
Follow your own impulses and explore that movement that you want to make. The class will lead participants through movement creation explorations and develop composition skills. Taught by Meagan O’Shea, based on the work developed for Stand Up Dance’s signature “dance like no one is watching”street dance project.
*Hip Hop

Learn individual moves and put them together in combinations! Led by the inimitable Vanessa Kimmons
*Body Tap aka Body Percussion Fusion
Learning to use our bodies as rhythmic instruments, we’ll explore complex patterns of sound and use full-body articulation as we hit the floor in the pursuit of beats! This style has influences from many disciplines–including tap, step dancing, drumming and boot dances–African gumboot dance and British empire “Welly” dances.  Non-marking shoes with good support necessary. (We’ll be stomping and hitting a fair bit.) Thurs. teacher TBA, Sat/Wed taught by the amazing Dianne Montgomery.
