Artistic and Administrative Assistant (Internship)

The School of Toronto Dance Theatre offers a variety of training programs for professional and recreational dancers of all ages from its studio and office space in Toronto’s Cabbagetown area.  The School strives for artistic excellence in teaching, stays vitally aware of ongoing developments in the art form of dance, provides stable administration and financial management, and maintains a strong and responsible Board of Directors.  Through its dedication to excellence, the School has remained at the forefront of training in contemporary dance in Canada for forty years.

The School of Toronto Dance Theatre is seeking an individual to assume the role of Artistic and Administrative Assistant

September 27, 2010 to January 28, 2011

$12,000 (pro rata from $36,000 per annum)

Full-time contract for four months

Working under the supervision of the Artistic Director and General Manager, the intern will be responsible for undertaking the management of both an artistic and administrative project at the School.

Specific Responsibilities

  • To coordinate two projects on behalf of the School, one each for the Artistic and Administrative divisions.
  • To facilitate, as the Artistic project, the traditionally student-run performance, Coffee House.  This will include:

o Acting as the staff liaison for the students

o Working with the students to develop production plans

o Overseeing fundraising, marketing, and budget management

o Promoting the performance to the dance community

o Front of house management during performances

o Revising and producing a production guide for future years

  • To manage, as the Administrative project, an outreach initiative to better track our graduates and create a more formalized alumni program, which will include:

o Compiling graduate tracking forms from May 2009 with existing information on alumni

o Updating the database with information, including graduate activities

o Updating list of alumni post-1996

o Devising a mechanism to receive updates from alumni or other networks on upcoming or past performances

o Regularly communicating with alumni regarding School activities in collaboration with the Communications and Development Coordinator

o Coordinating a small-scale alumni event at the school

o Managing the budget for this aspect of the project

  • To attend and participate in all staff meetings
  • To contribute to the School’s day-to-day operation as part of our administrative team, including reception duties, fielding general inquiries and updating the annual timeline
  • To act as front of house manager and assist Artistic Director with December performances as a follow-up to Coffee House project
  • To work closely with students through regular interaction and on a project basis
  • To work with the student council to develop a stronger mandate for their activities
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Necessary skills and experience

  • An interest in and specialized knowledge of dance and the wider cultural sector
  • A desire to develop a career in the dance in either an artistic or administrative direction
  • Excellent computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite and some experience with database use and creation
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills
  • An ability to take direction and work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A willingness to work cooperatively as part of a small and dynamic team

This position is a full-time, internship contract partially funded by the Careers in Focus Program.  To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

• Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive)

• Out of school

• A post-secondary graduate

• A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada

• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations

• Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
