AUGUST 14, 2010 Kathak Gala at 4:00pm

Workshops open to all levels of dancers. Observers are welcome.

Kathak Mahostav Canada initiative in an effort to gather annual Canadian Kathak artists to showcase their work and discuss the collective needs of this community. In May 2008, the RSKDO called a gathering of Toronto’s Kathak artists representing the different streams of Kathak to showcase their work in a three-day event. The response was tremendous and enthusiastic and built a sense of solidarity and a cohesive community spirit among the Kathak dancers. The seed was sown. The first Mahotsav generated a great deal of excitement and friendship paved the way for building a support network among the Kathak artists. Each concert featured both established and emerging artists enhancing an appreciation of the common roots and points of departure in the different styles. In August 2009 a Kathak Mahotsav was again held at the Fairview Library Theatre. It focused on the needs of emerging artists with an intensive in-depth training and development through progressive workshops with one concert featuring emerging artists.

My vision is that the Kathak Mahotsav Canada will eventually become an international event where Kathak artists will gather from around the world, in a glorious celebration of Kathak – an art form that has proven its aesthetic continuity over the centuries along with it’s adaptability and relevance, from the temple precinct to the Moghul courts and now in its global placement. It will also be a tribute to the great masters who illustrated by example that success was the result of a commitment to integrity, excellence and a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. I believe in the beauty and transformational power of the classical arts. They have a logic and practical wisdom that is relevant to the needs of today’s society.

Kathak Mahostav Canada is generously supported by The Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

A gathering of Toronto’s Kathak Dance Artists in celebration of the art and beauty of Kathak.
