Call for Participants: Giant Suprise Dance

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Meagan O’Shea/Stand Up Dance and Harbourfront Centre are pleased to be collaborating on an extra special ‘dance like no one is watching’ as part of The Hot Spot Festival, Saturday July 3, 2010.

Flashmob meets contemporary dance meets mobile clubbing. Think T-mobile and Improv Everywhere with a local twist.

Come and be a part of a Giant Surprise Dance that will take over part of the Hot Spot Festival! We are seeking a number of participants to learn and perform a dance routine amongst the public that gather at the festival. We need lots of volunteer dancers to participate. The first 40 people to sign up get a free tee-shirt. After that you’ll need to buy one!

There are 4 rehearsals. Please come to at least 2 of them. You do not need to be a dancer to do this. You need to love the idea and have fun. The choreography is simple. The effect will be stunning with many bodies performing choreography moving within a crowd.

How this works:
Imagine you are standing around the outdoor grounds of a festival waiting for the next big act to begin onstage. There is music on the loudspeaker – this is normal – but you begin to notice several people near you moving the same way. (this might be stepping or swaying). As the music continues you realize that all these people moving are wearing a kind of costume. As the music continues, the people, and you now realize there are a lot of them, are doing a dance. A routine! You might join in, you might just watch.

Please participate: sign up and learn the dance, and then come on out and have fun. The more the merrier.

REHEARSAL TIMES at Harbourfront Centre. The exact location is the Redpath Lawn, just West of Lower Simcoe on the South side of Queens Quay West. If people are lost, they can go to the security desk at 235 Queens Quay West.

Sunday June 20, 4 – 6 pm
Monday June 21, 6 – 8 pm
Wednesday June 30, 6 – 8 pm
Friday July 2, 2 – 4

PERFORMANCE: Saturday July 3, between 8 and 9 pm – less than 10 minute duration.

MEAGAN O’SHEA/STAND UP DANCE – “Off the wall, impossible to categorize, fun!” Montreal Gazette

Stand Up Dance creates innovative performances that blur the lines between dance and theatre, performance and action. Examining ideas from unexpected angles and engaging audiences on multiple levels Stand Up Dance produces unique and compelling performance experiences.

Artistic Director Meagan O’Shea founded Stand Up Dance in 2007 after conceiving dance like no one is watching – part spectacle, part social action. Spontaneous choreography and improvisation erupt in unexpected locations as pop culture and contemporary dance meet to create public engagement and animate space. dance like no one is watching began in 2007 and has grown each year. Last year it was part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche and featured 30 dancers in 4 teams traveling across the city in a dance-relay over 12 hours. Collaborating with professional, emerging, and community artists, Stand Up Dance engages local, national and international audiences. Based in Toronto, Stand Up Dance also offers movement, improvisation, performance, and creation workshops.

Meagan is founding co-director of hub14 and has created and performed numerous site-specific and improvised works that have been presented at Dusk Dances, Canada Dance Festival, ECITE in Austria, and independently.
