Workshop with Tanya Crowder – How to Survive Producing your Dance Show

Date: Sunday, March 21, 2010

Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Location: Hub 14, 14 Markham St.

How to Survive Producing your Dance Show!!! w/ Tanya Crowder, artistic director of Dance Matters

Presented by: Toronto Dance Community Love-In

The ‘How to survive producing your dance show’ workshop is partly educational, and partly an opportunity to share experiences within the realm of show production; to discuss success stories, challenges and to learn some skills and key pointers to make your next show less stressful and more successful!

About Tanya Crowder: “A marvelous dancer with wonderful control” (Globe and Mail),

Crowder has been working as a professional dance artist for 15 years, during which time she has been a company member of Kaeja d’Dance (Toronto) for seven seasons and has worked with several independent choreographers including Julia Sasso, Claudia Moore, Kate Alton, Eryn Dace Trudell, Lin Snelling, Darcey Callison, Pam Johnson, and Allison Cummings. Tanya has recently become a company member of Sinha Danse in Montreal for a new work to premiere at L’Agora in 2011.

Tanya resides in Toronto where she is a dance teacher for the 509 Dance Collective, and Production Manager for Series 8:08’s Choreographic Performance Workshop, as well as the Artistic Director of Dance Matters and her company HOWDARESHE Productions. Dance Matters is a community based dance performance series whose mandate is to feature original choreographies from dance artists of all disciplines and to offer an open forum discussion session to engage the audience and artists in uninhibited conversations and honest dialogue. Dance Matters’ purpose is to educate and inform the artists and the audience about dance and its many forms, disciplines and artistic points of view. The venues’ mission is to continue to fill a gap in the Toronto dance community by offering a performance platform with fuller technical support and capacity than the cities’ smaller venues/works-in-progress series’ and support the hundreds of artists who are unable or prefer not to self-present or who are not regularly presented in the current co-produced/produced platforms in the city.

Each Dance Matters series is a themed and curated mixed program to allow audiences exposure to a high quality dance performance; a show featuring selected works from artists of distinction or unique budding talent.

Don’t miss this opportunity to work with international dance artist Joe Moran

Monday, March 29 – Friday, April 2, 2010

10:15am – 12:15pm

Location: Winchester Street Theatre, 80 Winchester St., Toronto

UK dance artist Joe Moran teaches a week of professional-level morning classes in Skinner Releasing Technique!

This influential and rigorous approach to dance has evolved from the simple principle that the process of releasing tension and habitual holding patterns enables dancers to move more freely, powerfully and articulately.

In Releasing, spontaneous movement, evoked by guided poetic imagery and occasional hands-on partner studies, facilitates a creative exploration of technical principles such as multi-direction alignment, suppleness, suspension, economy and autonomy. Moran’s teaching is informed by his studies with a wide range of experimental dance artists and somatic practitioners in Britain and America, and his practice of Skinner Releasing Technique, of which he is a certified teacher.

This workshop is open to all dancers who have completed their pre-professional training and is only $120 (early bird price of only $100 if you register before March 12th).

Call 416-967-1365 to register today!

Physical Performance Intensives

with Adam Lazarus and guest instructors
Working in the tradition of French Master Teachers Philippe Gaulier and Jacques Lecoq, these 5 day courses challenge students to take risks, hone their improvisational skills and push through performance inhibitions to find the pleasure of being present, space, rhythm, fixed point, complicity, focus, flop and play. These techniques are useful for performers in all disciplines/writers/teachers and critical thinkers.

Intro to Bouffon Apr.19-23, 2010
The fine art of satire. Games and exercises are used to discover students’ pleasure to mock social hypocrisies while simultaneously making audiences love you.  Historically and culturally, Bouffon sat outside mainstream society, watching human hypocrisies and laughing.  Now and then, they came back to do a play for the hypocrites.  No subject, person or institution was spared their mockery.

Bouffon techniques are extremely useful for performers in all disciplines, as well as for writers, public speakers, teachers and critical thinkers. Through Jeu, students will re-discover their mental and physical agility, sensitivity, stillness and complicity in a group. The Bouffon allows the actor to be a big person in a small body and to refine their awareness of the world around them. Students are encouraged to embrace this awareness and the power of being seen and listened to.

Building Performance, Apr.26-May 2, 2010
Students come with ideas they want to work on and perform. Regardless of form, the focus of this week is on writing, directing and performing. This is a deeper exploration into the world of physical performance, culminating in 2 informal public presentations.  At the end of the week, the goal is for each student to have one or two numbers that are performable/expandable/sellable.

Saturday May 1 & Sunday May 2
Public Performances
PWYC with money going back to the students.

$315 1 week ($250 for union or previous students)
$600 2 weeks ($480 for union or previous students)

Partnering Workshop: The Scott Wells Workshop (April 14-18, 2010)

The Scott Wells Partnering Workshop: Flying does Not Equal Jumping

Workshop description:

Here’s the workshop in which Scott teaches his crazy lifts. We will work for clear, satisfying contact in which pleasure is the first teacher. We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics, and deft maneuvers. In Terms of the acrobatics, everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust – everyone will do something new. We will learn some repertory, and practice taking the aerial work into improvisation. The workshop is called Flying ≠ Jumping because I differentiate: jumping, a muscular action, from flying, an action of the bones that is affected greatly by emotions and attitude.

Open to intermediate to advanced level contact dancers and pre and professional dancers who are comfortable with contact dance technique

Scott Wells Biography:

In 1981, Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He stuck with both and currently directs a company in San Francisco and tours annually to Europe. Wells has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University. In 2005 Scott received the Izzie (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award) for Outstanding Choreography and was selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”. Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty years and BMC for ten. He recently completed his certification in Radical Counseling.

Things that Scott Wells is interested in:

I still teach Flying ≠ Jumping, but I also work a lot with subtle somatics to enrich body awareness, deepen the pleasure and heighten the abilities. My main work is as a choreographer and I rigorously investigate partnering and acrobatic movement ideas. I think this allows me to bring unique movement and training to my workshops. Also, I’ve been leading a performance jam in San Francisco. The atmosphere has more intention and group focus than a jam, but is less stringent than a formal performance. This work ranges from Authentic Movement to compositional scores that invite aesthetic discussions. We develop our ensemble work and gain performance skills and resources.

Examples of Scott Wells’ work:

Authentic Movement classes with Gennie Brukner

Authentic movement creates a space that helps you connect with what you most need to within yourself and to express what you most need to express.

It frees you up to be who you really are.

It can be fun.

It can be powerfully deep.

It can help release stored tension.

It can align you with your greatest needs.

The depth and the vitality that is uncovered can fuel your art, your spiritual practice and your life.

In authentic movement, you move in silence, with your eyes closed, in the presence of a witness. You begin by bringing your attention inwards and then wait for an inner impulse to move and/or to sound.

“Authentic Movement is fantastic. Where else do you get the chance to do whatever you want – move, be still, make sounds, be silent – with your eyes closed and nobody thinks you’re weird? You get a chance to be with yourself and notice how you are and what you’re doing. You can express yourself in any way you want. All that’s asked is that you be aware as best you can. This is healing. You get a chance to see the dark stuff, the stuff that maybe scares you, but Authentic Movement can also be a lot of fun. In my last session I had a great time. Some of the moments I experienced left me laughing out loud and the joy lasted long after I had left. I believe that each experience like this takes me to a new level of freedom.

Please call to register.

Ballet Folklorico Puro Mexico (BFPM) is a non-profit organization that was founded in May of 2003, in Toronto, Ontario: thanks to the enthusiasm of its members, whose only goal is to spread and promote Mexican culture through folkloric dance. The organization works to preserve the rich heritage of traditional regional Mexican dances through researching, recording and teaching, looking to reveal Mexico’s cultural diversity. Although relatively young, BFPM currently holds fifteen dancers, who proudly express the art of Mexican folklore.
