If you want to express powerful Spiritual ideas through movement then the “Disciples of Dance” is for you!

About Cadence:

Since it’s emergence in November 2008, Cadence Progressive Contemporary Ballet has quickly become a new and fresh voice in the Toronto Dance Community. Under the Artistic Direction of Courtnae Bowman, the company is interested in exploring interdisciplinary collaborations and producing innovative, visually stimulating, and athletic dance work of the highest caliber, to be presented throughout Canada and abroad, which is accessible and engaging to a broad range of audiences.

The company is made up of thirteen dancers, each classically trained but whose backgrounds range from ballroom, hip-hop, modern, classical ballet and jazz. Each dancer’s unique voice has been encouraged to thrive in the company which knows no boundaries.

The repertoire is as versatile as the company itself, blending pointe work, pop and lock, modern and contemporary jazz. Company members have had the pleasure of not only dancing the work of artistic director, Courtnae Bowman, but also working with established and emerging choreographers in workshops, creation, and production.

Choreographers have come from across Canada to work with the company in workshops and creation and have included: Josh Beamish, Valerie Calam, Zhenya Cerneacov, Robert Halley, Sharon Moore, Simone Orlando and Donald Sales.

The company highly values collaborations with artists from other disciplines and has completed two collaborations with Cuban film director Alejandro Valbuna of Aluna Films, and Toronto film director Jonathan Lawley of Eld Films.

Cadence has been invited to perform in productions: Fresh Blood, Dance Ontario Weekend 2009, Women in Dance, Impulse, International Dance Day’s Dance in Dundas Square, The Bazaar, Talent Defined, Breaking Through and most recently Dance Ontario Weekend 2010. The current company works are: After, Awakening, Ave Maria, Decorus Chaos, Throw It On the Fire, Opium Dreams, Uprising, I Used to Agree With You and Smelling the Color 9.

In July 2009, Cadence produced “Cadence City Connect: Vancouver”, the first of a series of collaborations with choreographers and dancers from cities both within Canada and abroad, with the vision of further developing the companies versatility. Dancers from Vancouver joined the company over the summer to collaborate with Vancouver based choreographer/dancer Donald Sales in the creation of Smelling the Color 9 and I Used to Agree With You.

The company’s artistic director is passionate about investing in dancer’s technical training and artistic development not only for the dancers within the company, but also for the community as a whole. It is for this reason that Cadence offers regular open company class in a variety of forms daily and also has created the Cadence Mentorship Program designed to feed directly into the company by offering pre-professional dancers an opportunity to study and be a part of the creation.

Cadence Summer Mentorship started its first annual program in June of 2009. Mentorship students took daily classes alongside company dancers with guest teachers Mercedes Bernardez, Valerie Calam and Debbie Wilson, and had the opportunity to take part in “Cadence City Connect: Vancouver”.

Cadence looks forward to continuing on its path to bring compelling contemporary dance works to a broad range of audiences and to represent a new generation of Canadian artists who reflect today’s zietgiest.
