Rumba classes with Melissa Noventa

The next 4 weeks of class (beginning February 18) will be dedicated to RUMBA!!!! The first two classes will focus on guguanco, and the second two on Columbia.

“Rumba” is the title given to a complex of secular music and dance that originated in Cuba during the 19th century. A fusion of primarily African and Spanish influences, Rumba is considered one of the most important ancestors of Cuban popular music.

Afro-Cuban rumba is entirely different from the westernized styles of rumba we now see on television and in ballroom competitions and cabarets. Afro-Cuban rumba originally emerged in rural areas and seaports — among subaltern communities of primarily African descent — as a form of diversion, liberation and protest. Through this form of music and dance, they were able to satirically comment on political and social events of all kinds that affected daily life in one way or another.

Today, Rumba is often considered one of the most popular genres of music and dance in Cuba. However, historically rumba was a genre of music and dance that, like other genres of African origin, was severely suppressed and restricted for its “lewdness”.

There are three types of rumba: Yambu, Guaguancó and Columbia.

Yambú, Colubia and Guaguancó are perfectly distinguished by their rhythms and styles of dancing. Comparatively speaking, Guaguancó is of a moderate tempo, with Yambú being the slowest rhythm of the rumbas, and Columbia the most up-tempo and complex.

(Matija’s classes fill up quickly)

Matija Ferlin’s training encompasses Release Technique and Muscle & Bone training. His classes begin with exercises sourced from Pilates work with the aim to strengthen the abdominals in order to release the rest. The class continues with floor work that includes exercises and combinations that focus on the isolation of different body parts and joints. Trying to organize the body through its own musicality and importing exercises from Muscle and Bone training, the work involves negotiating with stamina in order to introduce at the end of the class, a dynamic dance sequence that revisits the tools from the beginning of the class.

Workshop – Writing Dancing

Writing Dancing with Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion

A workshop as part of TWOBYTHREE: a festival of duets

March 5-7 | 11-5 | Dancemakers and the Centre for Creation

Register now by emailing

Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion lead a workshop focusing on discussion leading to practical work in the studio. Emphasis will be towards investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance can be made and what it can communicate to someone watching. Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to find material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and make them care what happens next. Days will be punctuated also with viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can’t do.

This workshop is for dance and other performance artists with experience of performing and making, who are interested in re-examining and extending their own process and practice.

What is Orixa Dance?

This class focuses on the dances of the Orixás – a dance originating from rituals of the Yoruban gods which have a strong presence in the North-East of Brazil. The movements and gestures of this dance come from the mythology of the Orixás. As each spirit has their own characteristics the dances vary, with strong and vibrant movements when related to warriors or thunder makers, to soft and swift movements when representing the current of a small stream, a variation which is also reflected in the rhythmic intensity.

What is the Silvestre Technique?

The Foundations of the Silvestre Technique are found in the gestures and mythology of the dances of the Orixa. These are connected with the four elements of nature; the chakras; and the three triangles of the body (red is the roots, purple is visualization, and yellow is projection). Together (dances of the Orixa, four elements of Nature, Chakras and the Three Triangles), they provide the expression and interpretation of the exercises.

The training works with the body structure (skeleton, muscles, joints, etc.) in order to develop the skills and the language of the technique.

These exercises activate the work of toning, flexibility, and joint mobility following the study and the symbolism of the gestures, in such a way that they activate interpretation and expressiveness; thereby, giving meaning to the movement. It is knowing how to express what is danced, using the body as a technically trained vehicle for that expression.

Rosangela Silvestre has rigorously researched dance and music in India, Egypt, and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic movement palette. She has studied to evolve what we now know as “Afro Brazilian” dance. She has toured with Jazz musician Steve Coleman, and has set choreography for such companies as, Bale Folcorico da Bahia, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico, American Academy of Ballet, DanceBrazil, and Viver Brasil. For more info on Ms. Silvestre check out

For more information on the event please contact Adrianna at or call 416-831-9579.

Partnering Workshop: The Scott Wells Workshop

The Scott Wells Partnering Workshop: Flying does Not Equal Jumping

Workshop description:

Here’s the workshop in which Scott teaches his crazy lifts. We will work for clear, satisfying contact in which pleasure is the first teacher. We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics, and deft maneuvers. In Terms of the acrobatics, everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust – everyone will do something new. We will learn some repertory, and practice taking the aerial work into improvisation. The workshop is called Flying ≠ Jumping because I differentiate: jumping, a muscular action, from flying, an action of the bones that is affected greatly by emotions and attitude.

Level: Open to intermediate to advanced level contact dancers and pre and professional dancers who are comfortable with contact dance technique

Scott Wells Biography:

In 1981, Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He stuck with both and currently directs a company in San Francisco and tours annually to Europe. Wells has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University. In 2005 Scott received the Izzie (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award) for Outstanding Choreography and was selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”. Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty years and BMC for ten. He recently completed his certification in Radical Counseling.

Fujiwara Dance Inventions presents The Physical Voice with Gerry Trentham

Monday February 22 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Sunday February 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Monday March 1 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre, Studio C, 509 Parliament Street

Informed by the voice work of Kristen Linklater and David Smukler, this workshop introduces participants to Trentham’s physical approach to both voice and speech.  The approach encourages the performer to embody text in a way that ignites the necessity to speak and uncovers the performer’s natural connection to spoken language.  The workshop is designed to ultimately build precision, resonance and range in the voice and elicit compelling spoken/physical choices in performance.

Gerry Trentham’s approach to voice is augmented with over thirty years as a dance performer and choreographer.  He has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe, originating roles in the works of a number of major Canadian choreographers including Serge Bennathan at Dancemakers. Trentham has held faculty positions and taught residencies at Canada’s National Theatre School, York University, SUNY Buffalo State, the University of Calgary, Grant McEwan College, Red Deer College and the University of Alberta.

Cost: $18/class

Denise Fujiwara’s approaches to teaching movement and dance have developed through 30 years of intensive dance practice, performance and study.   Her most influential mentors include Tokyo Butoh master, Natsu Nakajima and the now disbanded Mangrove Dance Collective of San Francisco.  She teaches and performs in Toronto and internationally.

Authentic Movement classes with Gennie Brukner

Authentic movement creates a space that helps you connect with what you most need to within yourself and to express what you

most need to express.

It frees you up to be who you really are.

It can be fun.

It can be powerfully deep.

It can help release stored tension.

It can align you with your greatest needs.

The depth and the vitality that is uncovered can fuel your art, your spiritual practice and your life.

In authentic movement, you move in silence, with your eyes closed, in the presence of a witness. You begin by bringing your attention inwards and then wait for an inner impulse to move and/or to sound.

“Authentic Movement is fantastic. Where else do you get the chance to do whatever you want – move, be still, make sounds, be silent – with your eyes closed and nobody thinks you’re weird? You get a chance to be with yourself and notice how you are and what you’re doing. You can express yourself in any way you want. All that’s asked is that you be aware as best you can. This is healing. You get a chance to see the dark stuff, the stuff that maybe scares you, but Authentic Movement can also be a lot of fun. In my last session I had a great time. Some of the moments I experienced left me laughing out loud and the joy lasted long after I had left. I believe that each experience like this takes me to a new level of freedom.

Please call to register. Classes are a maximum of 6.
